IN-N-OUT prints Bible citations on the wrapper of its food

September 30, 2008

In-n-Out Burger is a private family owned business that serves fast food. The urban legend that they print bible citations, such as John 3:16, on their food is actually true.  It’s lawful for them do to so because they are not public and do not plan to franchise. The blog question did not ask for my opinion on this but I think it is great that they can claim their freedom of religion by incorporating it into their business. When I saw that this was on the website I did not understand why it was grouped with bad myths such as some companies relationship with the KKK. The KKK and the Bible stand for two totally opposite ideas.  I’m happy for the family that owns the In-n-Out Burger because they chose to express themselves in that way  A very popular clothing store, Forever 21 also prints bible verses on its shopping bags. Anyhow, when I searched google for mentions of In-n-Out Burger and bible verses, nothing negative was found. Most of the articles were informative, just telling the reader that they can expect to see a bible verse, not attacking the restaurant.

1) Dig deeper into the problem addressed by your organization. Why should your organization receive funding that could be used elsewhere?

1) Dig deeper into the problem addressed by your organization.  Why should your organization receive funding that could be used elsewhere?

The ABA acts as a a representative of the legal profession defending liberty and delivering justice. It was difficult to find statistics on the problem that is addressed by the ABA.  However, I found a few articles and website that that show why the ABA’s programs are needed. The ABA provides continuing legal education for attorneys to keep them abreast of the ever-changing rules and regulations. This is needed because according the Virginia Lawyer Register, in one month, in Virginia alone more than 20 lawyers were either suspended or disbarred.  If lawyers regularly attend the continuing legal education programs provided by the ABA, they will be less likely to face disciplinary action and more likely to adequately represent their clients. They also promote pro bono legal services and provide resources or lawyers who provide those services. This is important because according to several articles and from my personal experience working with the ABA finding an adequate pro bono attorney is a difficult task due to budget cuts and state funding. The ABA helps good attorneys to take pro bono cases.

The organization should be funded because liberty and justice are fundamental ideals that this country was founded upon. The legal profession should be upholding these ideals. The ABA does that.

They make HOW MUCH?

The Executive Director earns $520,560 with an expense account of $34,215. The CFO makes $249,300. The President makes $100,000 per year.  I believe the salaries in are appropriate in this case because of the field that it addresses. The salaries of the staff is paid by members of the association who enjoy the benefits of being a member.  Ensuring those benefits as well as addressing the important legal issues is hard work.  Those individuals trying to preserve and ensure justice in the legal system should get paid the same as the members in the association.

The Problems addressed by the ABA

September 14, 2008

The major problem addressed by the ABA are the problems with the American system of justice.  These problems include lack of meaningful access to legal representation, suiting the changing needs of society, lack of understanding and respect for the law.  The ABA also strives to achieve high standards of professionalism, competence and ethical conduct, lack of full and meaningful participation in the legal professional by minorities.  The ABA also strives to achieve the highest standards of professionalism, competence and ethical conduct.  The ABA should be funded because the law is such an important part everyone’s life.  The ABA in a non-governmental organization that upholds justice and integrity in the legal field.

CODE PINK

September 11, 2008

I do not agree with CODE PINK.  I agree with their underlying message of ending all war and using money for better things such as health care and education.  However, their tactics are questionable.  They were recently in the news for making the negative statements about the troops, calling them terrorists, and killers.  I personally have been to a committee meeting on military spending before where they were heckling the members of the Senate.  Their website is www.codepink4peace.org.

American Bar Association

September 11, 2008

I will be writing about the American Bar Association, where I am interning this semester.  The ABA was founded by 100 lawyers in 1878,  It is now the largest voluntary professional association in the world. With more than 400,000 members, the ABA provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.

Their website is www.abanet.org
